The issue of the “Pandora Papers” has appeared and raised concerns in political circles and not only,
since apart from bankers, arms dealers, spies, athletes and stars in the international music industry,
they include names of over 330 politicians from 90 countries, 35 of which are country leaders.
600 international reporters from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ)
compiled around 12 million financial archives that contain information regarding the secret assets
in offshore companies during the period of 1996 to 2020.
283 Greek companies as well as some Cypriot ones appear as the beneficiaries of offshore services
involving prominent political figures.
The select few grow rich at the expense of the citizens since with the transfer of a large sum of
nationally produced wealth to tax havens and with the confidentiality regime, the member states are
deprived of the revenues deriving from payments of the respective tax.
The fact that 79 Members of the European Parliament, including 7 MEPs of New Democracy: AnnaMichelle Assimakopoulou, Stelios Kympouropoulos, Giorgos Kyrtsos, Vangelis Meimarakis,
Maria Spyraki, Eliza Vozemberg-Vrionidi and Theodoros Zagorakis abstained from voting on a
proposal for further investigation of the matter, spikes interest despite the fact that the European
People’s Party, which they belong to, is supporting the proposal.
And even though the economies of the member states, including the notorious economy of Greece
are in a dire position and with the implications of the pandemic worsening the situation, it would be
expected of officials to lead in the finding of revenue inflow into the treasuries of their countries.
Their stance raises many questions and tarnishes the already negative image the representatives of
the citizens have.
The chance for fame and glory is being opened for those in power to prove that they work for the
transparency they proclaim.
We anticipate their contribution to the investigation of the matter so that those involved can be
brought to justice for accountability
